As this semester is starting to pick up, I thought I’d make a collaboration of things that helped me stay disciplined in studying. So here is what I’ve learned in the last semester or so:
The issue with motivation is that it comes and goes. What you really need to focus on is self discipline. Self discipline is the ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses; the ability to pursue what you think is right despite temptations to abandon it.
Examples:
- Forcing yourself to wake up & get out of bed
- Not procrastinating even when you feel like it
- Making good habits
Remember why you are studying, why you are working so hard. Focus on the bigger picture, why, what, and for whom are you doing this for? Do not try to find that “spark” you had to get it going. Right now you have a duty to do, now do it.
Ways to Develop Self Discipline:
- Take things slowly but consistently. Don’t overload.
- Mix up your study methods. The more variety there is, the more interesting it will be.
- Don’t make flimsy excuses. Yes, some things require more attention than studying. However you should be truthful, is this important or are you just trying to avoid work.
- Manage your time realistically. Time manage your assignments- break the studying time into increments of hours+ minutes. Don’t over plan your to-do list!!
- Remove distractions. You know exactly what distracts you (for me my phone is a biggie cause I get so distracted if it rings or I get notifications & the excessive planning in what I should be doing just so I don’t have to do it then haha).
- Take advantage of your time. If you have time, use it. Whether its in the car while you wait for the bus, its still time you can use.
It’s ok to fail every now & then. It’s a habit, and habits take time to develop, its not
always a linear process 🙂
